Unfortunately, I won’t be able to watch tonight’s episode of Lost until the wee hours of the morning. There is good reason for this. A British rock band named The Cribs. I’ve quoted their songs in my recaps and I’m headed to hipster-nation to check them out. Whilst you await my sure to be hazy recap of what is sure to be a fantastic episode, here are some thoughts on “the big buzz” for tonight:
Someone Is Going to Die
The teasers have been telling us that someone is going to die in tonight’s episode. Even though that may be true, I think we’re going to find out something more profound than just the identity of the death. We’re going to find out that the person who is dead is actually the same person who was in the flash-forward coffin from “Through the Looking Glass!” We’ve all been speculating as to who that person might be, and I feel that I must give in to the theory that it is Michael (or Kevin Johnson). My gut had told me that it was Juliette, but I now believe that my gut was wrong. How all of this will tie together with Jack? We’ll find out tonight.
The writers knew that this episode might have to act like a season finale, so there should be a fantastic cliffhanger (as there always is). I hope ya’ll enjoy it as much as I’ll be missing it. We’ll chat tomorrow. If I can get a recap up ![]()

New York is universally known as an expensive city, but there is the occasional bargain and last night was it. I’ve been meaning to catch The Cribs for almost a year, missing them on multiple occasions. So I made a conscious effort during lunch one day and went by the Mercury Lounge to pick up a ticket. I arrived at my favorite venue around 9pm and grab a great view. The great thing about the Bowery Ballroom is that you can get pretty much a good view from anywhere inside the venue. The bad news is the bands tend to come on later than other venues. So if you’re old and have bad knees, you might be out of luck. Read the rest of this entry »

There is the semi-correct comparison (Pavement), the lazy comparison (The Strokes), and then there is the well I’m going just say whatever comparison (Sum 41). On their third album and official U.S. debut, Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever, The Cribs continue their brand of obnoxious, quick, taking-the-piss sound. The three Yorkshire brothers create a power pop mix that may be construed as bratty and the works of a drunken bunch. But hey that’s okay because the songs are interesting. Franz Ferdinand lead singer Alex Kapranos produced the album and you can hear the similarities in the guitar work. It’s fast paced repetitions that rams into your eardrums. “Women’s Needs” riff sounds a lot like the Pixies “Gigantic,” and the apocalyptic “Be Safe” has an early Nada Surf feel to it. The outstanding “Men’s Needs” lays out the complexities of the sexes and has the excellent line, “Have you noticed I’ve never been impressed by your friends from New York and London?” Though this is their debut album for the U.S. market, I would recommend their last album New Fellas as a very good introduction to this band. Overall, Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever is a good indie rock album that travels fast to your head. Whether it stays there is up to your tolerance for semi-serious pranksters.
