Heroes 2 Chapter 5: Fight or Flight

After four just OK episodes to start the second season, Heroes came roaring back tonight with an episode that may be the turning point of the season. That was the coolest mind trip ever. Finally, Heroes took my advice and borrowed from The Matrix. Here’s a recap of Chapter Five: “Fight or Flight” (by the way, I believe “Fight or Flight” was the title of one of the Lost episodes as well).

Kristen Bell is officially here. And what a breath of fresh air. We learn that her character is working for a company as well. She’s actually working for “Daddy” and has been sent to find Peter. Who’s Daddy? Is it Noah Bennett? Is it Bob the new HRG? Or is it Mr. Petrelli himself? She’s got powers, electrical powers. And she uses them to kill Ricky for lying to her about Peter’s whereabouts. Did I mention that she’s cute. And evil. Because she is, and I like it.

Peter, meanwhile, decides that he needs to open the box and find out who he is. What does he find in there? Some money, a picture of him and Nathan, a passport and a ticket to Montreal. Then Peter is in his new girlfriend’s apartment and goes Isaac-happy. More of what I asked for! He paints an image based somewhere in Europe – or, Montreal. Rue. St. Laurent & Rue St. Jacque do intersect in Montreal and if I remember correct, the painting looked like the Notre Dame was in the background (I’ll have a screengrab up tomorrow morning), but that’s not at that particular intersection – check the interactive map out for yourself. The helix symbol was also prevalent at the entrance of whatever building the two characters in the painting were about to enter. We’ll find out soon enough what that’s all about. Looks like Peter is going to be headed back to North America soon.

Odessa?Speaking of Montreal, it seems as if Mr. Bennett was also there. Or somewhere cold and European looking. With the Haitian, of course. We find this out because Mohinder has been looking for him. Mohinder has decided to bring Molly to the Company – because she still is comatose. Mr. Bennett, obviously, advises against this, but Mohinder does it anyway. While at the Company hospital, Nikki/Jessica makes a cameo. We learn that she admitted herself, so that she could rid herself of the multiple personality disorder.

Back in NYC, Matt’s on a mission to find out what his father has to do with all of this. He thinks Mrs. Petrelli can help, but his interrogation leads to nothing. When she doesn’t give him any details, he decides to go to Philly, where Molly told him he was, and face the man that left him when he was 13. Nathan tags along, because, well, we’re all fearless Heroes now, right? They fly there, smash the door in and get held up at gunpoint by Mr. Parkman. He recognizes his son and then Matt knocks the gun out of daddy’s hands and locks him up. Only to discover that he’s also marked for death….or is he?

Mr. Parkman talks his way out of the cuffs and promises to tell Matt and Nathan everything. They free him and he tells them a little bit. Tells them about how he became a scumbag by having the ability to read minds, but all of the other older generation heroes came together to save the world. He says he has a way of showing Matt how to better understand what happened to him. This is when this episode went from good to unbelievably great. That way is by trapping him into a dream world. Matt walked through a door and was suddenly locked up in a cell. Nathan knocked the door down only to discover that he was in another world also, the world where New York was blown up – just like Isaac had predicted. Matt faces his fear: him being on the other side – locked up in a cell while his deserted wife and bastard child eat at his guilty conscience. Nathan also faces his fear – the burnt faced Nathan. Matt starts to get into a fight with the guard of the cell while Nathan gets into a fight with his alter-ego. After a few minutes it turns out that they are just fighting each other. They both seemed to be temporarily trapped inside of each others minds. Then Parkman was able to get out of it, but Mr. Parkman has escaped. Absolutely trippy, and fantastic. It almost felt like when Neo walked through the door and discovered a whole different world :-) This is Mr. Parkman’s power – the Nightmare/Boogeyman’s power: he can control your dreams!

All the while, Monica is coming to grips with her powers. Micah explains to her what is happening to her and it seems like she’s got the same powers as St. Joan from 9th Wonders – it’s called muscle mimic. She can mimic what she sees (play the piano, skip rope, cut tomato, Bruce Lee, etc.). Mohinder can travel fast – by the end of the episode, he’s in New Orleans offering to help her. Hmmm.

Oh and if anyone cares, Hiro/Takezo Kensai and Yaeko are about to start a battle with some army that will eventually lead to a fight with White Beard. The story is being related to us through Ando getting the scrolls.

I didn’t miss Claire or West at all here. Nor did I really miss the twins and Sylar, although it looks like they are back next week. Also back next week is the evil side of Mr. Bennett. The man I suspect is behind all of what is going on. I am looking forward to his fantastic acting and deception.

Who is Kristen Bell’s character’s (did they mention her name?) father? What’s in Montreal? Do we really need another language (French)? Bob, the new HRG, also seems to be marked for death – is it everyone in that picture? Will Matt be able to develop his powers to the point where he too can control dreams? How are they all going to come together this season? All of this and more will be answered as the season progresses, and here’s to a turn for the better.

Looks like you’ve got the wrong intersection there, as it’s nowhere near the Notre-Dame Basilica. The intersection they’re referencing is in fact farther to the west, on the island of montreal.

However, Notre-Dame is not exactly visible from that intersection either. Looks like they decided to take some artistic license with the location or the street names.

I don’t recall any filming going on around here though… and it is my neighborhood. I’ll be especially eager to see what happens next episode.

  • Mr Bennett location.

“Speaking of Montreal, it seems as if Mr. Bennett was also there. Or somewhere cold and European looking. With the Haitian, of course.”

Well that was definitely not Montreal. They were supposed to go to Odessa, Ukraine. However, the background that was shown was Moscow’s Red Square.

Ah, I didn’t know there was an Odessa in the Ukraine (yes, I need to travel more often). Thanks for the insights, folks. Maybe Peter’s going to hitup Buona Notte on St. Laurent!

As an update to the original post, here’s something that hit me as an obvious question, but with all of the plots, it was overlooked: Kristen Bell’s character knew about Peter and his whereabouts. No one else on the show knows. So, whoever she is working for has some way of knowing that Peter is still alive, who he is, where he is and, possibly, how he got there. Hopefully, we’ll learn all of that pretty soon as well – maybe when they do the episode to recap the four months that have passed.
