Favorite Worst Mets from the 90′s

The Mets teams of the early 90′s were the worst that I have ever seen (I wasn’t around in the 60′s). Even though they were some awful teams, there were some players that gave us Mets fans a little hope. They were good players and good people on teams notorious for not only losing, but bad people.

In the spirit of favorite worsts of the 90′s, here are a few of my favorite players from the early 90′s Mets teams:

Rico Brogna - He was supposed to be the next Keith Hernandez. He was left-handed with a fantastic glove and some pop. I still remember him hitting a home run and describing the feeling of the swing after the game as “a Knife through butter.” He eventually got traded to the Phillies for Ricky Jordan and Toby Borland.

Anthony Young – How could we forget this lovable loser? He lost 27 straight decisions, a major league record that still stands. He was the poster boy for the “good enough to lose” Mets of the early 90′s. But somehow, he’s vanished from the face of the earth today. I wonder what he’s up to?

Josias Manzanillo – This reliever was a burst of energy that sparked some hope for Mets fans. Unfortunately, he got hit with some sort of testicular problems (I don’t want to say Cancer, because I don’t think it was). He eventually found himself on the Yankees. Perfect match.

Todd Hundley - The ultimate Met. I was really sad to see him go. The Mets have been blessed with fantastic catchers ever since Gary Carter (Hundley, Piazza, LoDuca, umm, Mackey “stutter-throw” Sasser). Hundley, who shares the record for most home runs ever hit by a Met (41), was a hard-nosed player and a fan favorite.

Bill Pulsipher – He was tauted as the next Sandy Koufax. He threw a no-hitter in AA Binghampton. He was quirky, goofy and highly superstitious (he used to change his facial hair style every start – and I would mimic it because I thought it was so cool). He was part of a the jinxed failure of “young guns” that became the face of the organization before they were even in the bigs.

Honorable Mentions: Dwight Gooden, Kevin McReynolds, David Cone, Bobby Jones and….Johnny Franco!
