Mets hitting coach Rick Down fired, Rickey Henderson hired

Newsday.com is reporting that Rick Down has been fired by Willie Randolph and the Mets and Rickey Henderson will replace him as the hitting coach.
I don’t know if Rickey will do well as a batting coach, but I do like that he is going to be around this otherwise boring team (with the exception of Jose Reyes, of course). The Mets have been too lackadaisical this year. There have been too few shows of emotion and passion for the game. Rickey brings that fire, that energy with him and Mets fans hope that it will be contagious in the clubhouse. Rickey’s personality seems to be the exact opposite of Willie’s and that could help balance things out.
Rickey will also help Jose Reyes jump from superstar level to “best player in baseball” level, and, for that alone, I am thrilled that he’s here. Here’s to a stellar second half. Let’s go Mets!
