Lost – episode 4

So last night’s episode is what I would call a filler episode. See, there are two kinds of episodes that Lost can do, a filler episode is the kind that just is put in there to fill out the season. Make things lengthy so that ABC can milk the cash cow for as long as possible. The other kind of episode is one where you learn something you didn’t know. Those are what I will call enlightening episodes. Yesterday, we did learn something, but it was in the last minute of the show. To me, that’s not good enough to make up for all of the filler. But here’s a rundown of what went down:
Kate and Sawyer make it back to their island and reunite with the klan.
So Kate wants to keep banging Sawyer, but he’s too scared to develop feelings for her. I think the producers hinted at him discovering that he’s a bit lonely compared to the other men on the island (Jin and is wife, Charlie and the blonde chick). Sawyer, keep it real – there’s plenty of other ladies on the island for you to conquer, don’t get stuck with just one!
Hugo finds a car
It’s a beat up, old VW. From the hippie days. It had been tipped over and had beer inside that was years old. It’s the first car on the island that we’ve seen, I think. They learn that it seems as if someone was trying to build a road on the island at some point. Anyway, Hugo talks Jin, Charlie and Sawyer into trying to get the thing standing up and then started. They push him down a hill (with Charlie riding shotgun) and whaddaya know, the thing starts to run. I’ll be really impressed if the find a Mobil gas station on the island next. Somehow, you get the feeling that this experience has helped Charlie conquer his fear of death.
We also learn that Hugo’s father left him when he was a kid….and he returned when Hugo won the lottery. I think Hugo’s flashbacks aren’t real. Maybe the flashbacks aren’t real for anyone – they are just what is going on in these people’s minds…dreams, or nightmares?
Kate heads back for Jack
Make up your mind, Kate. Jack or Sawyer? You can’t have you cake and eat it – or can you? I never understood that saying. But anyway, she goes back into the jungle to look for help in getting Jack back. By the end of the episode we learn that she’s looking for Rousseau. Turns out that Rousseau is Alex’s mother. So if Ben is Alex’s father, then we’ve got some interesting questions that come up. Why are Ben and Rousseau not together now? Is Ben really Alex’s father? Does Alex know who her mother is? I’m sorry, but I have to say – Rousseau looks like a man. I know she’s been living in the jungle for a long time, but still. She looks like tarzan or something.
Jin is trying to learn engrish
“I’m sorry. You were right. You look nice in those pants.” Way to teach him, James!
Oh, and one last question: what the hell was Desmond building? A “home”?
